In 2019, the sown area of melons in the Republic of Kazakhstan amounted to 96.0 thousand hectares, of which more than 63.0 thousand hectares were sown in the Turkestan region, or 65.6% of the total sown area of melons and watermelons. In the Turkestan region melons and watermelons are exported in the amount of more than 750 thousand tons to Russia, Belarus, the Baltic and European countries. The supply of fresh melons and watermelons in the country is more than 500 thousand tons. 70% of the fruits of melons and watermelon, which are exported, are rightfully accounted for by the varieties of selection of “KazSRI of cotton production” LLP.

For many years, the team of “Kazakh Research Institute” LLP bred melon varieties “Karakai”, “Yuzhanka-12”, “Zhienshar (Torpeda)”, “Valet”, and watermelon varieties “Dostyk-10” and “Kuzdik”. For all varieties of melon and watermelon, there are patents and copyright certificates.

New domestic varieties of melons and gourds are in demand, as they are highly transportable, resistant to a complex of diseases, and are distinguished by unmatched taste qualities.
