Subsidiary of the “National Agrarian Science and Educational Center” JSC – “Uralskaya Agricultural Experimental Station” LLP held a regular online consultation: "Varieties and technology of sowing perennial grasses."

Speaker of the consultation was Didenko Irina Leonidovna, the leading researcher of the department for breeding and primary seed production, Ph.D.

During the consultation, issues related to the development of the feed base of Western Kazakhstan were raised. In dry-steppe conditions, it is impossible to rely on one or two types of perennial grasses, the presence in the farm of grain crops, alfalfa, sainfoin, sweet clover, and preferably grass mixtures will annually ensure the most complete use of natural resources, and guarantee a stable forage supplies for animal husbandry in any year.

At the “Uralskaya Agricultural Experimental Station” LLP seed crops of perennial grasses have been sown for many years by the technology of sowing grass under semi-cover. As a cover crop, the spring wheat and barley are used. Grasses are sown with grain-seeders simultaneously with a cover crop to a depth of 3-4 cm.

The cover culture is sown through the row, that is, with 30 cm aisles, and grasses are sown in the middle of the cover aisle. Perennial grasses, with this sowing, having a large feeding area, are not oppressed by the cover crop, are preserved from death and develop well in the first and subsequent years and large, conditioned seeds are obtained.

“Since 1989, we have taken a new direction in the breeding of wheatgrass - the creation of varieties based on wild species. To create a new source material, we collected and created a collection through expeditionary surveys and collection of the gene pool of wheatgrass in 10 West Kazakhstan region’s districts. Now the collection of wild grain is reaching 1,500 samples. These samples are involved in the breeding process. 5 varieties of 3 species of wheatgrass have been created,”- said Irina Didenko.

In addition, the Ural Experimental Station is engaged in seed production of perennial herbs. The cultivation of elite seeds of perennial herbs is carried out according to the scheme: breeding nursery (1-4 years), superelite, elite. In 2019, nurseries for breeding new varieties of clover Sarygul 80 were planted on an area of 50 hectares, sainfoin variety Rozovyi 89 on an area of 27 hectares. Alfalfa variety Ural sinyaya on an area of 25 hectares. Variety of wheatgrass Karabalykskiy 202 on an area of 350 hectares. This will allow in the shortest possible time to create the necessary seed area in the region, to ensure the complete need for seeds and increase the crops of perennial grasses.
